See you at the “Crossroads” Of Intersectionality

On G581 Dubz’s weekly radio show “The Early Bird Special”, they aired a remix of a famous old school song while simultaneously educating their listeners. TemStar (Tembila Davis, The University of Tampa), an EDM and hip-hop artist, remixed Bone Thug-N-Harmony’s “Crossroads” but based the lyrics entirely on the theory of intersectionality, structural racism, sexual shame, and how it affects minority groups.

Crosssroads (Intersectionality)
Lyrics:
Now tell me Whatcha gonna do
When there aint nowhere to run (tell me what)
When society comes for you
When society comes for you
And Whatcha gonna do
where there aint nowhere to hide
When society comes for you
When society comes for you
#SayHerName for Sandra, Korryn sees Charleena
Aiyana, god’s got her and I’m gonna miss everybody
Lemme tell you about the concepts of intersectionality
It affects all different types of lives in this reality
The interconnected nature of social categorizations
Race class and gender overlap and create discrimination
In 1989 Kimberle Crenshaw coined the term
It was controversial, and from the racists she got some burn
They say it’s a way to enables people to play the victim
But its usually the privileged who don’t know and they the most explicit

Feminism isn’t always, inclusive of all women
Sometimes they only raise awareness of the white middletons
Its one thing to be woman, its one thing to be black
But when you’re both together you can expect to be treated whack
I’m sure everybody in america’s heard of the social totem
White man at the top and us at the bottom they say keep down and hold em

Pray, and we pray and we pray, and we pray, and we pray
Everyday, everyday, everyday, everyday
And we pray, and we pray, and we pray, and we pray

We are living in a state of false reality
Race is a social construct, institutionalized we see
Systemic racism is ingrained into society’s major parts
Economy, politics, education, and even arts
Roses are red, doritos are savory
The U.S. prison system is legalized slavery
We’re the only group that didn’t get our reparations
“I’m colorblind, I don’t see color” is the situation

Colorism side effect, made minorities hate themselves
black men don’t want black women they want someone else
Can you list a single black woman’s name That got caught in the their game
We die just as much but the coverage is not the same
When are we gonna get our bodies back
Hyper-sex-u-a-lized 400 years and that’s a fact
We’re either asexual or a hoe, gotta keep our body count low
We wanna own our sexuality, not wanna be awkward no more

Pray, and we pray and we pray, and we pray, and we pray
Everyday, everyday, everyday, everyday
And we pray, and we pray, and we pray, and we pray
See you at the crossroads, crossroads, crossroads
Intersectionality
See you at the crossroads, crossroads, crossroads
Intersectionality
See you at the crossroads, crossroads
intersectionality
See you at the crossroads, crossroads
wanna be equal with everybody
be equal with everybody
be equal with everybody
be equal with everybody
be equal with everybody
Living in a hateful world wanna go straight to heaven
That’s how we roll
Living in a hateful world wanna go straight to heaven
That’s how we roll
Living in a hateful world wanna go straight to heaven
That’s how we roll
I’m asking the good lord with a sigh
He said keep prayin you will rise
Let you be both black and lgbtq
They got nooses and bullets for you
And if you get raped, you might get arrested for prostitution too
Now tell me whatcha gonna do
Can anybody tell me why?
Hey can somebody tell me why we reach demise?
We just wanna thrive
Oh, so wrong
Oh, wrong
Oh, so wrong
Oh, wrong
See you at the crossroads, crossroads, crossroads
Intersectionality
See you at the crossroads, crossroads, crossroads
Intersectionality
See you at the crossroads, crossroads
intersectionality
See you at the crossroads, crossroads
